一般來說，在博物館裡千年以上的古物，都是隔著大片玻璃展出，但日本宮崎縣西都原考古博物館，卻大大方方開放千年歷史的陶器古物讓參觀者觸摸，感受古物上的紋理、線條及觸感。即使因此造成古物損壞，但仍沒有改變這項措施，也是日本唯一可以讓人觸摸古物的博物館。
